Last month, it was found that Nokia is planning to release a free version of it’s highly-regarded HERE mapping and navigation app for Android and iOS by the end of 2014. The beta version of Android HERE maps APK, labeled as 1.0, was uploaded to Mediafire last week and spotted by Spanish Android site El Android Libre.
According to the report, the APK works with any Android device running on 4.0 and higher and found all the basic mapping and navigation functions are here, including turn-by-turn directions and a satellite map layer. One of the advantage of the HERE Maps is that you can download and cache maps of desired cities or a specific region. These can then be used offline with no data connection which is very helpful where there is no network and also save some bucks.
I already downloaded the APK and it works fine on my LG Optimus L9. All you need to do is sign up for a Nokia HERE account or or simply link your Facebook account and select a desired country including Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, Australia and so on. HERE Maps also include support for bookmarks and a search function. Keep in mind that the larger and more populous the area, heavy the map data, means you need more space to store offline map data.
If you want to try Nokia HERE maps on your android device, download it from here, but I don’t know the source of this apk file, so I can’t say if it will do any harm. You’ll use it at your own risk!
